Scientist from Iceland GeoSurvey are presently supervising a five day short course on deep geothermal exploration in Kigali, Rwanda for the employees of the Energy, Water and Sanitation Authority (EWSA) of Rwanda. The Geothermal Training Programme of the United Nations University (UNU-GTP) organizes the event at the request of the Icelandic International Development Agency (ICEIDA).
This geothermal course marks the beginning of a six month training programme where 22 employees of EWSA attend lectures on drilling engineering, geological surface exploration, borehole geology, geochemistry and environmental monitoring. Hands-on training of the EWSA employees at the drill-site will then follow. Experimental drilling of the first of three exploration wells in the Karisimbi area in western Rwanda will start in the beginning of July. The training programme aims at making the employees of EWSA qualified to execute the necessary tasks involved in researching and monitoring future geothermal drilling in the country.
